Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the number of employment gains added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release when the closure started. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
